Control Engineering magazine gives Editors Choice awards to the Control Techniques' UniDrive SP and IPD's iGauge

UniSP

Flexibility
Open loop, Closed loop, Servo and Regeneration modes of operation all selectable as standard by the user.  PROFIBUS, DeviceNet, CANopen, Modbus RTU, INTERBUS, CTNet all available. Unique fieldbus to fieldbus gateway approach eliminates costly interfaces when more than one fieldbus type is required. True scalability of the PLC processing power with internal SM-Applications technology.  System status can be accessed whilst drives are running using the "hot-pluggable" RJ45 port and CTSoft PC tool. Universal encoder feedback accepts 14 different types. Global voltage supply, 200V to 575V ac.

Performance
Powerful SM-Applications module option for implementing fully customized solutions, or executing pre-engineered solutions. Conforms to IEC61131-3.  Drive to drive synchronisation for multiaxis motion co-ordination. Distributed control via CTNet fieldbus. Rapid response to motion profile demands with dynamic 250µs update rate.

For Less
Integrated EMC filter meets EN61800-3.  Secure Disable feature as standard reduces cost by lowering system component count while meeting EN954-1 category 3. Modbus RTU as standard. Auto parameter back-up by using the for security and fast commissioning.  Only one learning curve for mastering all types of drives. Zero space PLC (IEC61131-3) option. Prepackaged applications software for Winders, Flying Shears, etc, etc.  Truly scalable PLC power with up to 3 zero-space SM-Applications modules.

iGauge

iGaugeiGauge is both a measuring and general inspection appliance. It was designed to precisely and accurately measure part specifications including: length, width, diameter, angle and circularity. It also includes a set of complementary tools for assembly inspection and verification.

Capabilities:
• Automatically extracts edge information for easy measurement setup
• Calibrates to real world values and compensates for distorted images
• User-defined origin
• Pattern recognition to overcome variations in part location and orientation
• Optical measurements with high repeatability and sub-pixel accuracy
• Provides line, corner and circle constructs to simplify measurement definition
• Variety of measurements including: line, point, edge, diameter, circularity, concentricity, angle and arc
• Complementary tools including: intensity (light) variation, edge finding, spacing and counting, object counting and size verification, pattern matching and location reporting
iGauge has been designed for easy setup and installation, while being powerful enough to apply across a wide range of industrial applications.

The new UL61496 Standard for Machine Safeguarding with Active Opto-Electronic Protective Devices (AOPD's)

As of July 30th, 2004 new safety regulations come into effect that pertain exclusively to Active Optical-electronic Protective Device (AOPD) technology. The new standard, ANSI/UL 61496, is based on the international IEC 61496 parts 1 and 2, with minor changes to accommodate the requirements of the American Standards. In essence, UL 61496 adopts the safety Type designation for machine safeguarding devices that has been used in Europe for a number of years. In addition, the EMC testing prescribed is more rigorous. For a user, the UL 61496 ensures the testing of AOPD products to the most stringent requirements; for machine OEM's it means that AOPD products in most cases meet the international IEC 61496, and can be used on their machines throughout the world.

How does it affect the FGS/MGS and C4000 product families?

The C4000 has been designed from the ground up to comply with the new UL 61496 regulation. The C4000 is actually the only light curtain in the market to comply with the more stringent IEC 61508 standard. Therefore the C4000 is fully compliant with the new regulations.

If you require the UL/CUL marking on new light curtain safeguarding products, you need the C4000 to continue to comply with the UL requirement.

Sick has put together two transition kits to allow customers to use a C4000 in place of an FGS/MGS.  These include adapter cables, brackets and instructions.
